Summer Health and Wellness Habits

Summer health and wellness habits developed now will carry you and your children through the upcoming school year.

Hydration

Increasing the amount of water you drink is a fantastic summer health and wellness habit, we are happy to see many families coming into our office carrying and drinking from water bottles. Hydration from food sources also counts for your daily fluid intake, here are some hydration ideas:

  • Make a watermelon smoothie by blending watermelon, ice and water with a splash of lime juice. This drink not only hydrates, but provides other nutrients including the antioxidant lycopene, which research shows reduces blood pressure.
  • Coconut water with no added sugar is a fantastic source of electrolytes. Added to smoothies or on its own.
  • Cucumber water, either adding slices of cucumber to water or blending it. Cucumbers are 90% water and very refreshing.
  • Iced (or hot) herbal teas.
  • Beet Juice is a nutrition powerhouse. Aside from having a high water content, beets are full of antioxidants, vitamin C and nutrients such as fiber, magnesium, folate, vitamin B6 and more.

Summer Exercise

Summer is the time to try a new sport, add a daily walk into your day and get in the water and swim or learn to swim. Download a hiking app to get detailed maps of trails in your area and try a nature hike. On the hike use the 5-4-3-2-1 technique to ground you in your surroundings:

  • 5 things you can see
  • 4 things you can touch
  • 3 things you can hear
  • 2 things you can smell
  • 1 thing you can taste

Digital Detox and Summer Health and Wellness

Perhaps the best summer health and wellness habit you can develop is detoxing yourself and your family from digital media and screens. It may seem impossible, however small steps will reap huge rewards.

  • Have a digital detox plan – leave your phone or other screen item in another room when working, studying or socializing. Research the settings in your device that help limit access to apps.
  • Create no phone/screen areas in your home.
  • Organize and make easily accessible other things you and your family can do. Books, art supplies, athletic equipment, puzzles, and games should be easier to reach than a screen.

Address Health Concerns Early in the Summer

Schedule medical appointments early in the summer. Patients always comment on how the summer went by so fast. Scheduling is open in the summer months. AllerCease™ treatments for the following allergens will make your summer more enjoyable:

Sleep as a Summer Health and Wellness Habit

Developing sleep hygiene habits over the summer will enhance your health and life for years to come. With the increased activity during the summer, sleep as a recovery aid will keep you going strong for all that you want to get done.

  • Following the digital detox plan, eliminate screens before bed time.
