Myofascial “trigger points” or tight muscle knots, are painful, hyper-irritable spots found in the tight soft tissue of skeletal muscles. Typically when pressed upon trigger points cause pain in the immediate area and sometimes, radiating pain to other more remote areas of the body. Trigger points are different from acupressure points. In my experience they rarely are resolved with manipulative techniques, massage, medications or physical therapy. The most effective way to relieve this condition is with trigger point therapy.
Causes of Tight Painful Trigger Points:
In addition to causing both local and referred pain, trigger points also may cause restriction in range of motion, and can be a hidden cause of severe headaches and jaw pain.
